THE RESULT

For those of you who read my last blog about the Robert Burridge workshop, you might remember I had a piece on there that was incomplete...

So, I completed it...
*******

Here they are side by side.
I'm really pretty pleased with the way it turned out.
*******
One of the things he encouraged us to do is a series.
I've done a few in my art life but not something I do regularly, but think I will do a series of flower still life's.

I had just completed this one before the workshop so guess my brain is going that way so watch out!!
The flower still life train is on the track!!

Click on the title if you want to see more about this new piece

WORKSHOP WITH ROBERT BURRIDGE

***
I was blessed beyond blessed this past week
when I got to spend 3 days in an intense workshop
If you are not familiar with him and his work,
do yourself a favor and become familiar.
This workshop was all about combined media (the new phrase I learned instead of Mixed Media) abstract collage.
He usually does 5 day workshops so a lot was poured into 3 days but worth every minute!
Just want to share with you some things I came away with and you will be seeing me use some of these new found ideas in my work in my "INSIDE SUZI'S STUDIO" online, members only, workshops.
So here we go!
***

One of the back to the basics he had us do was get out our black and white paint and nothing else, then we did these two minute painting exercises. He would give us a word and we had 2 minutes to paint what that word said to us.
I loved doing this because something I have gotten away from is "warming up".
***

Next he talked to us about composition and went over all the different ones with us, then, again with black and white (and a little bit of color is we wanted) we did small paintings of the different compositions. Here I did, on the Left - overlapping rectangles, and on the right - Cantilever.
I just loved doing this because it was so freeing and at the same time I was seeing values and positions.
***

Here I did a piece using "curves" composition and then inserted figures into it. This piece, minus the figures, was my last piece on day one and I was not happy with it. The next day I came in and loved it!! Sometimes you just have to put it away and come back later. I will probably do more to this piece.

Demo by Bob on the table

Finished piece

Demo on the overhead so we could all see.
This was a class of 26 people. Maxed out!

 One view of the class.
***
So....Suzi....what did you do in the class?
Good question!
Here are my results....only 2 actually finished and one still in progress.

Pears are a subject Bob does a lot of!! And he is very good at it. Here is my pear painting.
***

This one I'm still working on but close to finishing.
Just some finishing touches.
***

And this is my main finished piece. I am very happy with it!
"Misty Morning" is the title.
***

Bob Burridge is a great guy and a terrific instructor.
I'm so thankful I got to study under him and got to know him.
A VERY interesting fella!

Hope you enjoyed having a little insight to this workshop
and if you ever get a chance...don't miss it!

KEEP WORKING

When you come to my studio for 2 days or take one of my collage classes on the road which sometimes is one day or two, it's almost impossible to really finish a piece. You may think you are finished but when you get home and get to looking at it you may realize you are not.
***
Some of you simply put your piece away and move on,
but not one of my last students!
Patsy just wasn't happy with what she left with, not completely so she went home and painted a whole lot more papers and worked some more on her piece.
I just love how she worked through this process and what the result was and I felt a need to share with you.
She says she's not sure she is finished....but I think it looks great!!
What do you think?
***
Good job Patsy!! Keep it up :)

At end of two day workshop. Looks good right?
but......

One week later....got rid of the window (which was giving her fits anyway) and added light and pattern

And Wha-la!!
I love it!!!
Much more light and the pattern does not take away from the focal point which is the teapot. The black around the teapot just makes it pop!
She's hooked :)

Thanks for stopping by and thanks Patsy for sharing.

WORKSHOP ETIQUETTE

I am going to be attending an art workshop
next week.
It's only the 3rd or 4th workshop I have ever taken and I am looking forward to it!

Today I received this from the people sponsoring the workshop and I felt it is something any and every person who takes a workshop needs to adhere to.

These are common problems I have dealt with myself and I hope it will help you to have a better workshop experience.
I know it will help the Instructor.

So CLICK HERE to read about
Workshop Etiquette.

Thanks!

TWO FUN COLLAGE DAYS!

I had such a great two days with these gals!! Patsy and Becky...sisters...and boy are they sisters!!
Patsy and I graduated High School together and this is the first time in years we have had quality time together! And these two together are a hoot!!
AND look at their wonderful collages!!
*******
For those of you who have taken from me before, I just want to say I am teaching in a totally different way that looks at composition, contrasts and color as well as pattern.
We spend the first day working on our sketches and painting papers and the second day we develop our composition.
Very challenging!
****
So here are some photos from the last two days.
LOTS of rain so a good time to be inside!
